1、Throughout the colonial period there was a remarkable shortage of women, which varied with the regions and was always greatest in the frontier areas. This shortage enhanced women's status and position and allowed them to pursue different careers. The puritans regarded idleness as a sin, and believed that life in an underdevelopment country made it necessary that each member of the community performed an economic function. Thus work for women was not only approved but also was regarded as a civic duty. Puritan town councils expected widows and independent women to be self-supporting. There was no social prohibition against married women working; on the contrary, wives were expected to help their husbands in their trade and won social approval for doing extra work in or out of the home.
The vast majority of women worked within their homes, where their labor produced most articles needed for the family. The entire colonial production of cloth and clothing and partly that of shoes was in the hands of women. In addition to these occupations, women were found in many different kinds of employment. They were butchers, silversmiths and gunsmiths. They ran mills, plantations, shipyards, and every kind of shop. They were gatekeepers, jail keepers, journalists, printers, nurses, and teachers.

2、Halloween (October 31) is a holiday widely celebrated with different names in many countries. Although it originated as a religious holiday, it has lost its religious connections in the United States. It is now celebrated largely as a children's day, and many American children look forward to it for days and weeks beforehand.
The orange pumpkin is harvested at this time of year and is hollowed out, a funny face cut into it, and a candle placed inside as decorations in the window. City folks, nowadays, sometimes use paper pumpkins for decorations. Some years ago, the holiday was celebrated by dressing up in strange and frightening costumes and playing tricks on one's neighbors and friends, such as ringing door bells, throwing bits of corn on the window panes, and in other ways making minor disturbances. More recently, children come to the door to have friends and neighbors admire their costumes and guess who they are behind the false faces and receive treats of candy, fruit or cookies. They say, "Trick or Treat", meaning "I will play a trick on you if you do not give me a treat."
This practice has even more recently developed into a significant international activity. Instead of or along with candy, the children collect money for UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund). This special collection of money by children for needy children throughout the world is known as "UNICEF Trick or Treat". Begun only recently, it results in several million dollars each year contributed to UNICEF. The collection box is orange, reminiscent of the pumpkin.

3、Human needs seem endless. When a hungry man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat, when a manager gets a new sports car, a big house and pleasure boats dance into view.
The many needs of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of needs, another level appears.
The first and most basic level of needs involves food. Once this level is satisfied, the second level of needs, clothing and some sort of shelter, appears. By the end of World War II, these needs were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses.
By 1957 or 1958 this third level of needs was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s, a fourth level of needs appeared: the "life-enriching" level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction, that is, the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation, this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement, and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called "luxury" items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical and dental care, and recreation. Also included here are fancy goods and the latest styles in clothing.
On the fourth level, a lot of money is spent on services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of needs as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?
A fifth level would probably involve needs that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth, and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

(1)、According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when ______.
A:he has grown dissatisfied with his simple shelter

C:he has satisfied his hunger
D:he has learned to build houses

A:lived in poverty
B:were very rich
C:had the good things on the first three levels

(3)、Which of the following is NOT related to "physical satisfaction"?

A:A successful career.
B:A comfortable home.
C:A good meal.
D:A family car.

A:The more goods the better.
B:The more "luxury" items the better.
C:The more mental satisfaction the better.
D:The more earnings the better.
答案:C

4、Though some people have suggested that women should return to housework in order to leave more jobs for men, the idea has been rejected by both women and men in public opinion polls. Lately some union officials have suggested that too many women are employed in type of work more suitable for men and that women should step aside to make way for unemployed young men. They argue that women - especially women in their childbearing years actually delay economic development and result in lower productivity, poor quality and inefficiency.
To solve the problem, they have suggested that the working women stay at home while their husbands or brothers were given double wages. They argue that under these circumstances, families would retain their same level of income, and women could run the house and raise children much better.
The suggestion has been rejected by 9 out of 10 people polled. A hundred persons in a big city were questioned last summer. Out of 50 women, 46 said they were unwilling to leave their jobs, no matter what the situation was. The other 4 said they would like to return home if their jobs could be taken by their sons or daughters. Of 50 men polled, only 6 said they would like to see their wives give up their jobs, if it meant higher wages for themselves.
Some other people have suggested another way called "phased employment theory". The theory suggests that a woman worker take leave from her job when she is seven months pregnant and stay off the job until her baby reaches the age of 3. It suggests that women on leave receive75 percent of their normal salary and be allowed to return to work after the 3-year period. This will benefit children, women, their families and the society. Some of those polled, both women and men, felt the idea is a good one. It definitely seems to be more acceptable than the suggestion that women return to home forever.

B:their participation in work has a bad influence on the economic development
C:most skilled male workers are now unemployed

5、Many studies have identified a strong link between suicide and diagnosable mental illness, especially depression. So, because women suffer from depression at a much higher rate than men, they would seem to be at higher risk for suicide. Yet, women actually commit suicide about one-fourth as often as men.
George E. Murphy, professor of psychiatry at Washington university school of Medicine in St. Louis, says that females may be protected because of the way they think about problems and interact with others. "Women process their experience with friends. They discuss their feelings, seek feedback, and take advice. They are much more likely to tell a physician how they feel and cooperate in the prescribed treatment. As a result, women get better treatment for their depression."
That treatment may help protect them from suicide, but Murphy suggests there is more to it. The approach to problem-solving is what often lands a woman in a psychiatrist's office in the first place, and that approach may be keeping female suicide rates lower.
Murphy believes women are less inclined to commit suicide because their thinking is more inclusive. While a man might tend to throw aside seemingly peripheral(非本质的,边缘的) issues to get to the core of a problem, a woman might take more things into account. She may continue to seek input and process problems long after the point where men decide on a course of action. "She'll consider not just her feelings, but also the feelings of others - her family, the children, even acquaintances - and how these people will be affected by a decision like suicide. A man is much less likely to take those things into account. He makes his decision, and it's about him, so he does not feel the need to share it with anyone else."

6、Here is one woman's story of balancing home and career. Rachel always dreamed of having a large family and an interesting career. She now has four children and works full-time.
"I really have two full-time jobs. My job in the city is in investment banking and I really like it. It's interesting and important. My other job is at home ---- raising four kids and keeping the household going. I like this job too, and though it's not always interesting, I know it's important. But when I'm not cleaning up the kitchen after a meal, or picking up the kids' things from the floor for the millionth time, or feeding the dog, then I'm falling asleep during my youngest daughter's piano practice. When I do have some free time, I've usually got a headache. The reality is that, most of the time, it's just too much."
Rachel has role overload. That is, she has difficulty combining the roles of worker and of wife and mother. Role overload is one of the disadvantages that today's women face. While both parents are more "stretched" when the woman of the household works, it is usually the woman who does most of the childcare and housework. Most studies investigating housework conclude that women (whether employed or not) do "the lion's share" of the housework and childcare. An Australian study, for example, found that employed wives did 69.3 hours of unpaid work around the house during a two-week period while employed husbands did approximately 31.2 hours. A study by Bird shows a similar picture for U.S. households. In this study of 1,256 adults, Bird showed that while working women certainly want an equal share of housework, they "shoulder the main burden" by doing approximately twice as much as their spouses. Her study showed that after marriage, women gain 14 hours of household chores per week, while their husbands gain only 90 minutes.

(1)、What can we learn about Rachel from "I really have two full-time jobs"?

答案:D

(3)、According to the passage, which of the following is the consequence of women's role overload?
A:They have difficulty balancing home and career.
B:They ask the husband to contribute more to childcare and housework.
C:They have to take up more than one job to support the family.
D:They always complain about having too much work at hand.

7、The judgment of the Englishman by all other European peoples is that he is the most suspicious, the most reserved, the most unfriendly, the coldest-hearted of all western peoples.
Ask a Frenchman, an Italian, a German, a Spaniard, even an American, what he thinks about Englishmen; and every one of them will tell you the very same thing. This is precisely what the character of men would become who had lived for thousands of years in the conditions of northern European land.
But, on the other hand, you would find that all nations would speak highly of certain other English qualities - energy, courage, honour, justice. They would say that, although no man is so difficult to make friends with, the friendship of an Englishman once gained is stronger and truer than any other. And as the battle of life still continues, and must continue for thousands of years to come, it must be acknowledged that the English character is especially well suitable for the struggle. Its reserves, its cautions, its doubts, its suspicions - these have been for it in the past, and are still in the present.
It is not a lovable nor amiable character; it is not even kindly. The Englishman of the best type is much more inclined(倾向于) to justice than he is to be kind, for kindness is an emotional impulse, and the Englishman doesn't like every kind of emotional impulse. But with all this, the character is a great one, and its success has been the best proof of its value.

9、    A nineteenth-century French dramatist remarked that the only difference between animals and human beings is that people drink when they are not thirsty and make love in any season. The sociologist's definition of the difference is more scientific: only human beings have the ability for creating and transmitting culture. More than any other species, human animals are able to surpass their biological limitations by sharing ideas and passing on what they learn to future generations.
All animals, including human beings, have certain problems in common. In order to survive as species, they must find a home, get food and provide for their young. Animals are guided by instincts that enable them to cope with these problems of existence. Their responses to their environment is a fixed predictable manner: beavers build dams as homes, lions hunt for antelopes for food, and birds build nests to protect their young. Should these solutions turn out to be inadequate, animals for the most part will still go on making the same responses to the same problems. It is true that much of the behavior of higher animals is learned through direct experience. As everyone knows, dogs can be taught to overcome their instinctive dislike of cats, and parrots often learn new calls. In some cases animals have also been known to teach their offspring what they themselves have learned. Nevertheless, human beings are unique in their far greater ability to learn from experiences, to create new solutions to old problems, and most important, to use language to transmit what they have learned to future generations. While animal societies must rely on biologically inherited methods of dealing with their environment, human societies have the far greater advantage of a socially inherited culture.

10、Sporting activities are essentially modified forms of hunting behavior. Viewed biologically, the modern footballer is in reality a member of a hunting group. His killing weapon has turned into a harmless football and his prey into a goalmouth. If his aim is accurate and he scores a goal, he enjoys the hunter's triumph of killing his prey.
To understand how this transformation has taken place we must briefly look at our forefathers. They spent over a million years evolving as cooperative hunters. Their very survival depended on success in the hunting field. Under this pressure their whole way of life, even their bodies, became greatly changed. They became chasers, runners, jumpers, aimers, throwers and prey-killers. They cooperated as skillful male group attackers.
Then about ten thousand years ago, after this immensely long period of hunting their food, they became farmers. Their improved intelligence, so vital to their old hunting life, was put to a new use--that of controlling and domesticating their prey. The hunt became suddenly out of date. The food was there on the farms, awaiting their needs. The risks and uncertainties of the hunt were no longer essential for survival.
The skills and thirst for hunting remained, however, and demanded new outlets. Hunting for sport replaced hunting for necessity. This new activity involved all the original hunting sequences but the aim of the operation was no longer to avoid starvation. Instead, the sportsmen set off to test their skill against prey that were no longer essential to their survival. To be sure, the kill may have been eaten but there were other much simpler ways of obtaining a meaty meal.

11、September is the ninth month of the year. However, the word September comes from the Latin word septem, which means "seven". This is because long ago a different calendar was used in which September was indeed the seventh month. When Julius Caesar, leader of Rome, changed the calendar, he made September the ninth month.
September in the Northern Hemisphere(北半球)is a time of change. With autumn and winter getting nearer, temperatures usually begin to drop. It is also the productive time of the year since it is when farmers harvest some of their vegetables and fruit, especially apples, which have finished their growing season.
September has thirty days. In English, the word is often abbreviated(缩写)to just four letters. The major U. S. holiday in September is Labor Day. This holiday, which comes on the first Monday of the month, is in honor of all people who work. September 7th is Brazil's Independence Day and Chile's is the eighteenth.

12、Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with students. If a long reading assignment is given, instructors expect students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. (Courses are not designed merely for students to pass exams.) The ideal student is considered to be one who is encouraged to learn for the purpose of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. Some students may be frustrated with teachers who do not believe it is necessary to grade every assignment. Sometimes homework is returned with short written comments but without a grade. Even if a grade is not given, students should learn the material assigned.
When research assigned, the professor expects students to begin and to complete the assignment with minimum instruction. It is the student's responsibility to find books and articles in the library. Professors do not have the time to explain how a university library works; they expect students, especially graduate students, to be able to find what they need in the library.
Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not depend on them too much. This is different from teacher-student relationships in other countries. In the United States, professors have other duties in addition to teaching. Often they do some administrative work within their departments. In addition, they may be required to write articles and books. Therefore, the time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited. If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either ask a professor for help during office hours or make an appointment.

(1)、What does the author mean by saying that "Courses are not designed merely for students to pass exams"(paragraph 1)?

14、Standing alone at Brown's party, Anna Mackintosh thought about her husband Edward, establishing him clearly in her mind's eye. He was a thin man, forty-one years of age, with fair hair that was often untidy. In the seventeen years they'd been married he had changed very little: he was still nervous with other people, and smiled in the same shy way, and his face was still almost boyish.
She believed she had failed him because he had wished for children and she had not been able to supply any. She had been annoyed for this fact over the years and in the end, quite some time now, she had consulted Dr Abbat at Edward's request.
In the Browns' rich living room, its walls and ceiling giving out a bright light with a metallic surface of imitation gold, Anna listened to dance music coming from a tape recorder and continued to think about her husband.
In a moment he would be at the party too, since they had agreed to meet there, although by now it was three quarters of an hour later than the time he had planned to come.
The Browns were people he knew in a business way, and he had said he thought it wise that he and Anna should attend this gathering of theirs. She had never met them before, which made it more difficult for her, having to wait about, not knowing a soul in the room.
When she thought about it she felt herself unfairly treated, for although Edward was kind to her and always had been, it was far from thoughtful to be as late as this. Because of her nervous condition she felt afraid and had developed a sickness in her stomach. She looked at her watch and sighed.

15、   A good teacher means many things to many people. In my own experience, I think that the people I respect the most and think about the most are those who demand the most discipline from their students.
I think of one teacher in particular that I had in high school. I think she was a good teacher because she was a very strict person. I remember very vividly a sign over her classroom door. It was a simple sign that said: "laboratory--in this room the first five letters of the word are emphasized, not the last seven." In other words, I guess, labor for her was more important than oratory, which means making speeches.
She always prepared for her lectures and work for the day, and she demanded that her students do the same. We got lots of homework from her. One time when she had broken her arm, everybody in the class thought that maybe the homework load would be reduced, but it continued just the same. Since she couldn't write, she stamped her name at the bottom of the papers to show that she had read them.
I think sometimes teachers who demand the most are perhaps liked by students the least. But as time goes by, this discipline really seems to benefit the students.

16、    When Pilar Jiménez got married in 1961, she knew her marriage would last. "Back then, no one separated," says the 71-year-old lady. "Marriage was for life." Indeed, her husband and she lived happily until he passed away two years ago. But if her marriage was typical of its time, so are those of her 10 children: five of them are now divorced.
The rate of broken marriages has risen steadily since Spain legalized (合法化) divorce in 1981, and a 2005 reform has caused those numbers to skyrocket. The reform has allowed couples to separate for one year before divorce. As a result, Spain now has one divorce for every 2.3 marriages-an increase of 74% in the past two years alone.
For the Catholic Church, Spain's rising divorce rate shows the morality (道德) is being threatened, and this threat comes from the government, whose power has no longer remained in the Church. Cardinal (红衣主教) Augustín García-Gasco believes that radical separation of politics and religion has led to nothing but despair along with abortion and fast divorce. Benigno Blanco, president of the Spanish Forum for the Family, agrees, "The reform has made the marriage contract useless."
However, Spaniards (西班牙人) no longer feel shameful by the prospect of divorce. A website named "divorcioexpress.com" offers couples agreements on divorce through the Internet. "We facilitate about 100 divorces a month," Alberto Gillette, the founder of the website, says, "but we're not encouraging divorce, just making it easier to get." Like the companies, some sociologists also think it unreasonable to be worried about the divorce boom, because the number of separations is dropping down when that of divorces is increasing. "In the past, when it came to the issue on divorce, Spain seemed unique in Europe." Sociologist Inés Alberdi says, "Now we're more like other European countries."

17、 For some time I've had a church member provide me with a rose to pin on the lapel of my suit every Sunday. Because I always got a flower on Sunday morning, I really did not think much of it. It was a nice gesture that became routine (平常的). One Sunday, however, what I considered ordinary became very special.
As I was leaving the Sunday service, a little boy came up and said, "Sir, what are you going to do with your flower?" At first I did not know what he was talking about, but then I understood. I said, "Do you mean this?" as I pointed to the rose pinned to my coat.
He said, "Yes sir. I would like it if you are just going to throw it away." The little boy said, "Sir, I'm going to give it to my granny. My mother and father got divorced last year. I was living with my mother, but I could not stay, so she sent me to live with my grandmother. She has been so good to me that I want to give that pretty flower to her for loving me."
When the little boy finished I could hardly speak. My eyes filled with tears and I knew I had been touched in the depths of my soul. I reached up and unpinned my flower. With the flower in my hand, I looked at the boy and said, "Son, that is the nicest thing I have ever heard, but you can't have this flower because it's not enough. If you look in front of the pulpit (传道坛), you'll see a big bouquet of flowers. Different families buy them for the church each week. 18、 Teachers have become especially important to the future of public education in the U.S. But with the number of teachers increasing, the nation faces another problem - the shortage of teaching talents (人才). That's why hundreds of school districts across the country are looking for ways to attract, reward and keep good teachers. One of the most popular ideas is the system of merit pay, which aims to measure the quality of teachers' work and pay teachers according to the results of the measurement.
Traditionally speaking, public schools' salaries are based on years that a teacher spends on the job and college credits he or she earned. It is a system supported by unions who suggest treating all teachers equally. Under this situation, the longer a teacher works, the more credits he or she is rewarded, and the higher salary he or she gets.
But not all authorities (当局) accept this way to measure teacher's work efforts. Policymakers are now focusing on a relatively more measurable aspect: student test scores. In many districts, authorities are carrying out systems that can track student scores back to the teachers who have taught them. Based on the scores, the authorities may determine the bonuses (奖金) given to each teacher and, in some cases, target to help teachers make progress of their teaching quality. According to some researches, offering bonuses to teachers who raise student achievement will improve the overall quality of teaching. More importantly, it can attract more highly qualified talents into the field of education.
It's hard to argue against these policies, which are indeed working, but such programs have backfired in some states. As far as I'm concerned, a more promising way is to combine the system of merit pay with more opportunities for professional training and exchange of experience for both the talent and novice (新手) teachers.

19、    The West begun to take more notice of the East. The fifth volume of an enormous work re-assessing the Chinese contribution to science and technology is to be published next year. The first volume, which was published twenty years ago, set the tone for the whole work. In it, evidence was given to show that many inventions which, until then, western historians had claimed for Europe, were made first in China. The attempt to rewrite the intellectual history of the world was not received without protest by some reputable historians. However, the evidence that has been presented so far in the first four volumes has persuaded many historians who were skeptical at first. China's invention of paper, printing, the magnetic compass and gunpowder has never been disputed, but this new history has added advanced bridge design, mechanical clocks, paddle boats and many other inventions to the list.
In the four volumes published so far no attempt has been made to explain why China has not kept up with the West in science and technology in modern times. It is probable that the answer is to be found in the social and economic history of China, where a static society under a relatively benevolent regime (仁慈的政体) of scholar-gentry (学者绅士) contrasts with the potentially revolutionary and dynamic society of the West at the end of the Middle Ages. In recent years, the Chinese government has been making every effort to catch up with the West again, and there is little doubt that the gap is being reduced year by year. But will China avoid the West's mistakes?

20、    England is not a big country: from north to south and from east to west it is only about three hundred miles across. But for a small country it has a surprising range of climate. People who have never visited England, or who have visited only one part of it, often make the mistake of thinking that it is a cold and wet country. Except for the summer months of June to September; this is probably true of the North of England and the Midland. In the south, however, the climate is much more pleasant. One result is that when people retire form a job in the north, they often prefer to move down to the milder south.
Perhaps the warmest part of the country is the south-west, which consists of the countries of Devon and Cornwall. The warm Gulf Stream flows across the North Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico and makes the coastal regions of the south-west quite warm. Palm trees, bamboo and many semi-tropical plants grow well in the south-west of England. Flowers and vegetables ripen as much as a month earlier than those elsewhere. Farmers in the area obtain a higher price for their vegetables and flowers because they are ready earlier. In winter there may be probably no snow at all in the south-west. This may be one of the reasons why the south-west is one of England's most popular holiday areas.

21、    You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead!
Of course he isn't really dead. With any luck he isn't even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks.
There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress. Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar!
But although their work depends on tricks of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman' s success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is "blown up" in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.
Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff a thousand feet high. His parachute failed to open, and he was killed.
In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. For nowadays there are stuntgirls too.

23、"You're trying to control my life," says my nine-year-old son. "I don't know why you think you can do that, but you can't." I received this bit of information after I asked Gabriele to put his dirty socks in the basket. And I get no sympathy from my mother, who says, "You let him have his way from the beginning."
It's true. I have always asked Gabriele's opinion, found out how he felt about things - treated him as my peer, not my child. And what have I got from my troubles? A lot of back talk. At least I'm not alone; it's a complaint heard among parents across the country.
It's not just that we're confused by the contradictory advice offered in parenting books. The fact is, in an effort to break away from how we were raised - to try something more liberal than our parents' "do it because I say so" approach - our generation has gone too far. "Today's parents want to be young, so they try to be friends with their children," says Kathy Lynn, a parenting educator.
"When it comes to discipline, our society has gone from one extreme to the other," says Ron Moorish, a behavior specialist. "We used to use the strap, to intimidate. Then we had permissiveness, and now it's about giving children choices and allowing them to learn from their own experiences."
Real discipline, says Moorish, is about teaching. "By correcting our children when they do something wrong, we teach them how to behave properly," he says. But this only works, he emphasizes, if parents regain their position of authority. Children will always be children. The key is for parents to choose to take the time to guide and teach their kids.
Rita Munday, a mother of four children, couldn't believe the dramas that played out in the children's shoe store she operated. She often saw children insist on having the high-priced, brand-name shoes. And even when the mother didn't want to spend the money, she would give in when the kid started acting up and throwing shoes around.
Rhonda Radice, Munday's younger colleague, is one parent who has bucked the trend - and is proud of it. "I don't negotiate with them. You can't. I've seen parents come into the store and bribe their children to behave. You shouldn't have to buy love and respect."

A:adopt the "do it because I say so"approach
B: teach their children to understand the rules
C:negotiate with their children for a decision
D:never allow their children to have their ways
答案:B

24、A report consistently brought back by visitors to the US is how friendly, courteous and helpful most Americans were to them. To be fair, this observation is also frequently made of Canada and Canadians, and should best be considered North American. There are, of course, exceptions. Small-minded officials, rude waiters, and ill-mannered taxi drivers are hardly unknown in the US. Yet it is an observation made so frequently that it deserves comment. For a long period of time and in many parts of the country, a traveler was a welcome break in an otherwise dull existence.
Dullness and loneliness were common problems of the families who generally lived distant from one another. Strangers and travelers were welcome sources of diversion, and brought news of the outside world. The harsh realities of the frontier also shaped this tradition of hospitality.
Someone traveling alone, if hungry, injured, or ill, often had nowhere to turn except to the nearest cabin or settlement. It was not a matter of choice for the traveler or merely a charitable impulse on the part of the settlers. It reflected the harshness of daily life: if you didn't take in the stranger and take care of him, there was no one else who would. And someday, remember, you might be in the same situation. Today there are many charitable organizations which specialize in helping the weary traveler. Yet, the old tradition of hospitality to strangers is still very strong in the US, especially in the smaller cities and towns away from the busy tourist trails. "I was just traveling through, got talking with this American, and pretty soon he invited me home for dinner - amazing." Such observations reported by visitors to the US are not uncommon, but are not always understood properly.
The casual friendliness of many Americans should be interpreted neither as superficial nor as artificial, but as the result of a historically developed cultural tradition. As is true of any developed society, in America a complex set of cultural signals, assumptions, and conventions underlies all social interrelationships. And, of course, speaking a language does not necessarily mean that someone understands social and cultural patterns. Visitors who fail to "translate" cultural meanings properly often draw wrong conclusions. For example, when an American uses the word "friend", the cultural implications of the word may be quite different from those it has in the visitor's language and culture. It takes more than a brief encounter on a bus to distinguish between courteous convention and individual interest. 25、         There's a great story about an old Finnish woman who, without quite realizing it, was using her cell-phone to access the Internet and track her city's public transit system. When asked why she used the wireless Internet so frequently, she replied, "What are you talking about? I don't know anything about this wireless Internet stuff. I just know the bus is here."
Regardless of whether you want to admit it, a lot of us are like that old Finnish woman. When it comes to new mobile applications, many of us do not realize the capability and power that we hold, literally, in our hands.
What we are looking at today is the mobile Internet in its infancy. Now that using the Internet from home or work has saturated much of society, the next logical step is to be able to use the Net when you are far away from your desktop or laptop. Speech recognition is one way to do this, and there are a number of services, collectively called the "voice Web", that will make this possible. All you do is to use a phone or wireless device to call a phone number, and speak commands to an intuitive system. It will then give you the information you're seeking, using either a synthesized voice or an audio file.
In the United States and Europe, the hot technology for wireless devices is called WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), which is being considered as the world standard. WAP is supported by major phone companies including Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson, and is simply a means of transmitting information, much like HTML which is a means of communicating on the Internet.
Currently, wireless Internet connections may give you news, sports scores, stock quotes, and the weather if you're lucky. But if you've ever used this technology, you know it's slow, costly and doesn't seem worth the time and effort, if it works at all. All of this technology points to easier living. Perhaps you'll need to find a restaurant for an occasional business meeting. You'll press a button on your mobile phone, and access the Internet to pull up a list of great restaurants in your immediate area. You'll hit another button, say a few words into the handset and you've got a reservation for four.

(1)、The author uses the story of an old Finnish woman to indicate that __________.
A:she is ignorant of some common knowledge
B:public transit system contains the accessory to Internet
C:many people are unaware of the function of the new appliances being used
D:the Internet is experiencing rapid growth
答案:C

(2)、The word "saturate" (Para. 3) most probably means _________.
A:state
B:utilize
C:despise
D:fill
答案:D

(3)、According to the text, WAP is a __________.
A:technology standard set by major phone companies
B:substitution of HTML which can be applied on the Internet
C:means of exchanging information
D:a software application for transmitting voice over telephone lines
答案:C

(4)、We can infer from the passage that the mobile Internet is different from the previous Internet in that the former __________.
A:can be accessed by desktop computers
B:has no need for wire appliances
C:can be used to book a table in a restaurant
D:is equipped with speech recognition systems
答案:B

(5)、What is the attitude of the author towards the future of mobile Internet?
A:Indifferent
B:Neutral
C:Optimistic
D:Pessimistic
答案:C

26、Imagine your sitting on your front garden admiring the shining sun when your neighbor comes with that annoying car with the noisy sound and the exhaust pipe blowing out this horrible black smoke. What are you going to do about it?
In our modern days, too many people depend on their cars to get to work or to drop off their children to school. However, is it safe to have an increasing number of cars on our roads?
Research shows that cars create serious pollution. Exhaust from all combustion engines produces harmful effects on the health of both car users and all innocent walkers. Cities have become islands of toxic chemicals from the unrestrained use of vehicles burning fossil fuels. The harmful health effects of car exhaust are pervasive and difficult to measure. For example, people with asthma would suffer with attacks due to the pollution. The world wild life also suffers from the cars' toxic emissions. No matter how much manufacturers try to make cars environmentally friendly, it will damage our earth in one way or another.
Additionally, cars are too dangerous for our community. Careless drivers put themselves and others in danger. Cars are critical to walkers especially to children if the driver is not looking on the road or somehow distracted. Have you known someone whose toes or feet have been run over by cars while crossing the street?
Lastly, cars create social problems, which could lead to poor health. A few drivers suffer "Road Rage" and put themselves, loved ones and others in a threatening situation. Some cars create disturbing noises, which disturbs people living near highways, freeways, etc. not to get enough sleep. People depend on their cars so much they forget to exercise their bodies and end up being obese or having a heart problem.
As a result of the excessive number of cars on our roads, everyone's life is in danger. In order to create an environmentally friendly and safe world, it is necessary for each country to limit the permits in number to control regional air pollution. Second, car manufacturers should try to improve the efficiency of vehicles, such as finding solutions to emissions of combustion engines, developing new power sources such as new fuels, natural gas. Third, try to improve efficiency of traffic by setting up dedicated bus lanes and giving priority to car-pools and vehicles with 3 or more passengers. Besides, traffic can be scheduled; for example, commercial traffic at night; large companies can shift working hours and decentralize administrative operations.

27、Since World War II, there has been a clearly discernible trend, especially among the growing group of college students, toward early marriage. Many youths begin dating in the first stages of adolescence, "go steady" through high school, and marry before their formal education has been completed. However, emotional maturity is no respecter of birthdays; it does not arrive automatically at twenty-one or twenty-five. Some achieve it surprisingly early, while others never do, even in three-score years and ten.
Many students are marrying as an escape, not only from an unsatisfying home life, but also from their own personal problems of isolation and loneliness. And it can almost be put down as a dictum that any marriage seldom solves one's problems, more often, it merely makes them worse. Furthermore, it is doubtful whether the home is an institution that is capable of carrying all that the young are seeking to put into it. Young people correctly understand that their parents are wrong in believing that "success" is the ultimate good, but they erroneously believe that they themselves have found the true center of life's meaning. Their expectations of marriage are essentially utopian and therefore incapable of fulfillment. They want too much, and disappointments are often bound to follow.
Shall we, then, join the chorus of "Miseries" over early marriage? One cannot generalize: all early marriages are not bad any more than all later ones are good. Satisfactory marriages are determined not by time, but by the emotional maturity of the partners. Therefore, each case must be judged on its own merits. If the early marriage is not an escape, if it is entered into with relatively few illusions or false expectations, and if it is economically feasible, why not? Good marriages can be made from sixteen to sixty, and so are bad ones.

(1)、According to this article the trend toward early marriages __________.
